THOU SHALT NOT KILL The scripture says, “Thou shalt not kill.” In its border aspect, killing is wrong because if you cannot give life, what right have you to take life? But this was said thousands of years ago when the world was not so technologically advanced. Today, you will know, and science tells us that with every breath you take, you are killing millions of microbes because every way you go, everything you see is filled with life; it is steaming with life. KARMA AND UNINTENTIONAL KILLING Killing can be divided into two categories: unconscious killing and conscious killing. We are killing without intention and killing intentionally. Walking on the ground, we might inadvertently tramp upon some little creature. Karmically, that would be non-binding to you. In other words, that would not create an impression or samskara on your psychic self for which you would have to pay. For every deed we do, we have to pay. There is a Law of Grace, and at the same time, there is a law of retribution. So, when something is done unintentionally and without pre-thought, then you are not bound to pay for the action that you have performed. But scriptures will bear it out that the very taking of that life, although unintentional, has some effect upon your psyche. The result is there because every atom within your body is connected to every cell and atom in this universe, which is why the scriptures would tell you to do charity. In the laws of karma, we are creating a balance by doing charity. So, even those things done without intention or unknowingly can be balanced by being charitable, kind, and compassionate. THE LAW OF THE FISH When it comes to intentional killing, the law of retribution will affect you, and that is why the scriptures say, “Thou shalt not kill.” As we have just said, if you cannot give life, what right have you to take life? There is a law of the fish. Big fish eat small fish to survive. Every time you eat fruit or vegetables, there is life in that. But what form of life? Can man survive without taking any life? One scientist has even given us the heartbeat in a cabbage. I think his name was J. C. Bose, an Indian scientist; he proved to the world that there is a heartbeat in a cabbage. Experiments have been done with plants, and they have found that the plant feels. A person approaches a plant intending to damage it, and the plant screams, recorded by modern machinery. Things we eat have life. Everything existing in this universe has life. So, according to the laws of causes and effects, let us only take the necessary life to survive. So, the law of the fish has an impact and has some value to a certain extent. But when we abuse the law of the fish and kill things which are not necessary for our survival, then, as I said, we are abusing that law. From the plant, we come to the animal; from the animal, we come to man. Man says kill. For example, the wars we have in the world it is nothing else but murder, murder to uphold artificial boundaries created by man. Where one country is Germany, another Spain, another England and another South Africa, this world was not created with countries. Man made those countries, and because of his selfishness, because of the idea of the preservation of the ego for his own needs and wants, boundaries are created, and those boundaries wish to be preserved. You have countries that want to extend the boundaries, and they do it by killing, not with love. Boundaries can be grown where a few countries can come together in a federation without resorting to violence. So, it is wrong, and the excuse given is that I am defending my country. Are you protecting your country at the expense of life? EVERYTHING EXISTENT IN THIS UNIVERSE IS FILLED WITH LIFE We have seen that no one can survive without some sort of killing. The carrot we eat has life; if we should saw through this piece of wood, we are sawing through life because every atom in this wood is life itself. Nothing exists in this universe, but life, and even mineral matter, the grosser matter, is steaming with life. If you take a stone and leave it outside for a while, for a few months, you find changes taking place in the stone. The changes would take place not because of external circumstances, the sun and the rain in which the stone is placed, which plays a tiny part, but because there is a quality in the stone itself. It is the inherent nature of the stone to change, and why does it change? Because it has life. So, we have seen that everything in this universe is filled with life. For personal survival, let only such life be taken that is a real need and an absolute necessity. CAN YOU KILL LIFE? What is life? Can you kill life? Can you kill? We are looking at the subject now from a different aspect. Life is eternal; every scripture bears this out: life can never be destroyed. There is no death, but there is a transformation like our old analogy. You take clay, and you mould a mouse with the clay and then with the same clay, you mould a cat; it is a different form. One is a mouse, and the other is a cat, but essentially it is clay. So, even if you break down the structure of the cat and remould the same clay into the form of a little puppy or dog, you have not destroyed the clay. You have converted the form because the existence we know of with our five senses – seeing, touching, tasting, smelling, hearing – can only perceive name and form. But when man transcends the value
Transformation of the Ego: Merging with the Ocean of Love and Bliss
EXPAND THE EGO AND EXPERIENCE THE “IS-NESS” OF THE VAST OCEAN OF BEAUTY This ocean of endless beauty robs one of breath and thought. Do not just observe the sea and its beauty; dive in it and drown in it, and then you will experience the beauty more. You become the beauty. By drowning in it, one is drowning one’s little self, the little self of the ego, the small “I,” which causes all this trouble on dry land. When the ego self is drowned in that beauty, the ego self merges into the beauty, and you go through a period of total forgetfulness of your little self. Although you function with the little self and do the daily chores and the daily things of life while functioning in the body, you remain submerged in that beautiful ocean of utter bliss. As we have said before, this ego-self is nothing but thought formations that give you a personality, which is the ego. But you need a personality to live in this world. How can you live in this world without any personality? Everyone has a particular kind of personality. But the man who is drowned, submerged in that ocean of beauty, incorporates all personalities in his personality. All the personalities of the entire world, the whole universe, rocks, flowers, plants, animals, all are absorbed within him, for he is submerged in that ocean of beauty. His personality is not annihilated, but his personality is expanded, embracing everything that there is. By embracing all that there is, he experiences the “Is-ness” of the vast ocean of beauty. This cannot come about by a mental assumption or intellectual rationalization. Mentally, you might say, “I am my brother’s keeper; my brother and I are one.” But, with that conscious analysis lurking in the dark shadows of the subconscious mind, you find a separation. You might love your brother very much, you might love someone very much, very dearly, but if something good happens to that brother, are you going to feel elated? Generally, not. Ninety-nine percent of the world’s population would not. Generally, he would develop envy, why did he win a million dollars in the lottery, not me. Envy would be there, so there is no value in that love, for in the first place, it was not a love. But if you have assimilated the other person right within yourself, in your heart of hearts, you would feel elated just by the thought that he had been given a million pounds. It is the same as if I have been given a million pounds. So, you would give him all the good wishes so that he can enjoy what he has gained. NOTHING WRONG IN POSSESSING ITSELF, BUT DO NOT BE ATTACHED The million pounds gained by this man is not an accident. There is no such thing as luck. He has done something to get that. We call it luck because he has not worked for it on the surface level. But yet he got it, so we call it luck. It is no luck. Perhaps he was owed that. Possibly, the doings of his past created a credit balance for him, and he got it in this life. So, by having this understanding, we would say that he deserves it, and who should feel envious of anyone who deserves it? So, to find that beauty and be submerged in the ocean, envy disappears. Wanting to accumulate is nothing but building walls around you, building a wall so high that you cannot see, never mind being submerged in the ocean of beauty, but you cannot even see the sea. And that is produced by greed, by accumulation, and what do you accumulate? You accumulate possessions, material possessions which are none other than an illusion. A man can only eat one meal at a time. He can only sleep in one bed at a time and drive one car at a time, although he might have a dozen vehicles. So those are his necessities. But people do not think in that fashion that let me just have my necessities to keep alive, to keep this body going, or to do the work I have to do. They feel that having a bank balance of millions or whatever wealth and possession they think will give them security. But it is not so. It does not provide you with security. Those thoughts of accumulation accompanied by greed could never give you security. The most insecure people I have met in this world have been multi-millionaires. First, they work hard to make millions and work harder to look after the millions. You see the vicious circle, yet nothing is wrong with having something. There is nothing wrong with possessing an umbrella on a rainy day like this. Why must you get wet when an umbrella is available? But here again comes the question of attachment. How much am I attached to worldly possessions? We will permanently be connected if we do not eliminate the idea of greed and accumulation. You can only eat one meal and drive one car at a time. After all, what is the difference between a small Volkswagen and a Roll Royce? They both take you from point A to point B. That is the purpose of a car. So, you can go with the Volkswagen or with the Rolls Royce. You still reach what you want to achieve. But, having the Rolls Royce, you are building up your ego. It is a status symbol. When you drive down the road, you say, “There goes Mr. Rockefeller,” and you salute him, but why do you salute him? Why do you salute that rich man? Because it is an inner desire of yours, a subconscious desire to have what he has. So, both are in trouble, the poor and the rich. The poor man wants to accumulate and is greedy and yearning for it, and the rich man has possessions and
The Illusion of Backwardness: The Cunning Mind and the Eternal Now
CAN WE GO BACKWARDS? There is no spiritual development. You are as fully developed as you are. Evolution has to do with the unfolding of oneself, and it can only be progressive. You might go through specific experiences that seem retrogressive to you, but every experience experienced is for a purpose, and the goal is unfoldment. So, if you go through something controversial or filled with some kind of adversity in your life, it is an opportunity to learn something, and that very process of learning is the unfolding of oneself. Is there anything in life from which we do not learn? Look around you everywhere. Look at the ants crawling on the floor; how systematically they are crawling and not bumping into each other. Look at the bees going from flower to flower and yet gathering the flower’s fragrance, the flower’s sweetness and giving us honey. The flower is not hurt. The flower has offered to provide the honey and its sweetness. How much to learn? So, unfoldment is never retrogressive. There is never a time when you take two steps back and one step forward. I always call the mind a cunning animal, and its cunningness makes us think, “I have gone backwards.” No. There is only one way to go; the way is always forward. When we come into adverse circumstances, it would never mean that we have gone backwards; it is spurring us onward. But the mind refuses to accept the lessons that adversity wants to teach us, for as I have said many times repeatedly, that we go, forever onward, forever onward. There is no adversity in life. There is none. But this cunning mind thinks this is adverse. So, you leave home in the morning to go to your job or factory or whatever, and you have a little tiff with your wife. What is wrong with it? It will make us realise during the day that “why this tiff”? Why can we not look at it from that angle? What have I done that has created this little tiff? How much is there not to be learnt from that? That tomorrow, let me be kinder and prevent the conflict. So there is never any retrogression, but always a progression because the course of evolution is pushing you on and on and on to the starting point, and everyone will find the whole circle again. You reach back where you have started. You reach back home – you leave home in the morning, but in the evening, you come back home again. That is evolution, and that is the path that everyone is treading. WHEN THE MIND IS CENTRED, THE WHIRLPOOL OF LIFE ASSUME LESSER IMPORTANCE Life works in cycles, and there are cycles within cycles. The point to be realised is that although the wheel turns and turns and turns, it can only turn from the axle, which remains forever still. Do you see the point? Let the wheel of life turn, but at the same time, realise that the wheel is balanced on the axle that is remaining still. We are trying to find the stillness within ourselves, yet let the wheel turn. Life goes on with all its ramifications and bumps on a potted road. Yet the axle is there; the centre is there. And are we not trying to find the centre of ourselves? And finding the centre of ourselves, knowing the centre of ourselves, realising the centre of ourselves, we say, “Let the wheel turn, so what.” As the wheel keeps turning in life, why do we focus on the periphery rather than the centre? For it is the recognition and the realisation of the centre that brings more excellent stability to us, where we become one with ourselves – for the wheel is useless without the axle. Can the wheel ever turn without the axle? So, we find the axle, the centre and by concentrating through our spiritual practices or doing our spiritual practices, the mind goes to the axle, the centre. And when the mind is centred, the wheel, the periphery, would assume lesser importance. THE REVERSAL IS PART AND PARCEL OF PROGRESSION Why do we feel troubled? We think “two steps back and one step forward” because our minds are not in the centre of ourselves. Yet, for the wheel to function, it has to have all those spokes. Without the spokes, there is no wheel, and those are the spokes that constitute life. Those are the spokes which form the various facets of our lives. To recognise the value of the spokes and, to recognise the value of the rim, and to recognise the value of the axle forms the totality of life. A wheel will always turn forward. It is not the nature of the wheel to turn backwards. Okay, you would reverse slightly back to make a turn. But reversing slightly back to turn to the next road is essential, for how will you get to the next road if you do not reverse back slightly? The reversal is part and parcel of progression. You want to go to streets A, B, and C and turn into roads X, Y, and Z, so you reverse slightly into someone’s garden path, perhaps and then turn. That reversal is necessary for you to get onto the right road. So where is the stepping backwards? That very reversal is also stepping forward. You see how it works. Therefore, no person must ever think that I am going back. No. I am going forward – and everything, even that little reversal to change direction, was necessary for me to enable me to make my turn. So, there is no backwardness. Everyone forever goes forward, and that is the message of hope, which man must understand not only with the mind, not conceptually, but with an inner realisation that all this is necessary for me. YOU ARE CONTROLLED BY DIVINE WILL, WHICH IS ALWAYS MOVING FORWARD To
We Combine All the Yogas: The Harmonization of All Teachings
WE HAVE TO FIND A WAY WHEREBY THE BODY AND MIND CAN BE WELL-RESTED Many schools of thought teach their way. What we are most concerned about is our way. We recognise the necessity for deep rest of the body and the need for deep rest of the mind. The enlightened man could live in seemingly absolute turbulence, which is turbulent to us from our level looking up. He can live in that life of turbulence, but inwardly, he is experiencing that deep calm, tranquillity, and deep rest. We in kindergarten have to train ourselves to find that beautiful relaxation of mind and body. We know that in this twentieth century, in East, West, North, and South, everyone seems to be living a very hectic life. We have brought this hecticness upon us, so now we have to find a way to find tranquillity. We must find a method whereby the body could be well rested, and the mind could follow suit with equal rest. WE INCORPORATE ALL THE YOGAS When one achieves that tranquillity, one can go beyond body and mind and be in touch with the Being within us. This is one form of yoga – this forms part and parcel of Raja Yoga. In Karma Yoga, you have total activity, and you reach a state where, in that activity, you are rested. You are rested automatically in all that hustle and bustle. Our teachings regarding meditation, such as mantra meditations and specific other yogic techniques, is the path of Raja Yoga. In our systems of meditation, we incorporate all the Yogas. We include the methods whereby the deep rest of mind and body is attained and where our being is touched, and then, in the waking state, we say, let us do our best. We do our best in our waking state to better ourselves, to face our weaknesses and better those weaknesses, and we have the ability once we have diagnosed our problems as a doctor would tell you that proper diagnosis is half the cure. In our system, we incorporate Raja Yoga, the methods of mantra and the other forms of meditation which fall under Raja Yoga. We include Karma Yoga, whereby we better ourselves by finding our weaknesses and replacing weaknesses with strengths. Then we also practise Jnana Yoga, which is the yoga of wisdom, and that is where mental analysis, which also serves a valuable purpose, comes in. For a person to do any practice or develop any skill in action, he must necessarily, to a certain extent, appreciate the value of the practices he is doing or the mode of life he is living. This mental analysis of the various systems is called Jnana Yoga or the yoga of wisdom. So, in our system, we develop Raja Yoga, the practices; Karma Yoga, the way of living; and Jnana Yoga, the yoga of wisdom and with the combination of these three Yogas, we are also in touch with the fourth yoga, which is called Bhakti Yoga. Bhakti Yoga is the yoga of devotion, where the husband becomes devoted to the wife, the wife becomes devoted to the husband, and like that, devotion increases. WE APPROACH THE ABSTRACT THROUGH THE CONCRETE Our aim in life is to be in touch with the abstract, which might seem inconceivable to the limitations of the mind, so we approach the abstract through the concrete. The object of our devotion could be our guru, could be our wife, could be our husband. It could be any personage, past or present, with whose teachings we agree and whose teachings are beneficial to us. By having that utter devotion to the person, personage, or object, we automatically draw upon universal forces unto ourselves, and by drawing the universal forces unto ourselves, we benefit with more significant expansion of the mind. There, we are aiding the yoga of wisdom by greater awareness. We are assisting our practical living life, which is Karma Yoga. And we are also at the same time going deeper and deeper into our practices. So here, Bhakti, Karma, Jnana and Raja Yoga, all these Yogas merge into our teachings. They all become part and parcel of each other. And that leads to the totality of life that we should be living. OUR YOGA IS THE YOGA WHERE ALL THESE TEACHINGS ARE COMBINED If we have a motor car with six pistons, I do not think we should be satisfied if the car runs on only four pistons. We know that the vehicle has six pistons, and to get the maximum value of that car running smoothly, we must get all six pistons working beautifully. Because of our limited and conditioned minds, the carburettor sometimes becomes dirty. Divinity is within us; we know we must accept that it is there to be experienced. But that petrol cannot flow through and give the car a smooth run if the carburettor is dirty. So, we clean the carburettor. We clean out the jets and all the dirt in the carburettor so that the petrol can run through, and our car can run smoothly ahead. That is all. We clear this carburettor by our meditational practices for a start. That would lead us to live a better-integrated life in the waking state that will give us some understanding, Jnana Yoga, that will provide us with devotion. So, our yoga is yoga, which could be an integrated way where all these teachings are combined, which could lead us to progress quickly. We all know that we have come from Divinity, and to Divinity, we reach. We know that. But without doing anything, we will take two million years perhaps, but we do not want to wait so long. We want to reach there faster. Therefore, we have these practices that combine all these forms, which I have briefly described. As we become more and more established in these various modes of living and in the understanding we gain, in the devotion
Breaking Free: Rising Above Conventions and Living in the Moment
WHY WANDER THROUGH LIFE? Why wander through life? Why must your boat drift along without a rudder? You have your rudder but hook it on or screw it onto your boat, and then you steer the ship, and there is no more wandering through life but a planned journey through life. By planning, I do not mean any minute detail that has to be accurately worked out, but you have an overall picture like an artist doing a painting. He has an overall picture in his mind, but as he goes along with his brush, the picture changes, and he might come up with something different from his preconception. Or as a poet that writes a poem and has just one little thought floating in his mind and from that one thought, on he goes, and he reaches different dimensions because the composer or the poet goes beyond the conscious mind and by going beyond the conscious mind and to a higher level of his mind, he tunes in with that which we know as the universal mind. All thoughts and everything are floating around just for us to tune in and pick it up. As the saying goes, there is nothing new under the sun, which is true. So, the poet, artist, or musician just draws from what already exists. Then, he brings it down to the conscious level of his mind, and because of his impressions, experiences, and the inhibitions that he might have, he interprets it in a certain way. TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT INHIBITIONS ARE INHIBITING People are always concerned very much about inhibitions. To be concerned about inhibitions is inhibiting. Why be concerned about inhibitions? Because the more you mull over it, the more you think about it, the deeper it becomes implanted in your subconscious mind. Naturally, you and everyone else living in this world are, to a certain extent, governed by the environment, governed by conventions. Why allow yourself to be governed by conventions? Be unconventional. That does not mean running down naked through Oxford Street, but letting life be like a poem, free in expression yet bound by meter and total freedom in expression. If you observe the meter of life or the various bondages placed upon you, like the football field so many yards long and so many yards wide, and once you kick the ball over the line, it is outside, those are the boundaries you are born with. But do not let the conventions of life make a football of you. That is the idea. So, within that boundary of the field, you play your game in freedom and play the game for the sake of the game because there is no such thing as winning or losing. What is winning, and what is losing? You scored three goals, and the other team scored two. That must not bother us. Win or lose, just play the game of life. After all, what are you going to do with the winnings? You come naked into this world, you go away naked, and all that which is in between is a gift. Enjoy the gift. TO GET RID OF INHIBITIONS, TRY TO LIVE FOR THE MOMENT Start enjoying the gift of life. There will not be any place left for those inhibitions because inhibitions or repressions are boundary-creating, and those boundaries are in your tiny little conscious mind. You think it is that small, little conscious mind that thinks. But is your conscious mind thinking, or is it just swayed by past impressions and the circumstances around you? How many thoughts does a person think that are original? If they were original, they would be creative, and creativity knows no inhibitions. So, we are using this gift of the mind as a stumbling block, but it can also be used as a tool if we, throughout the day, just half a dozen times perhaps, just watch our thoughts, and if you watch them, you will know hey, what have I been thinking about in this past five minutes. You know what? It is rubbish because it is of no importance. It has become the past, and analyzing all those thoughts just half a dozen times a day takes a few minutes, then you will find that you are either thinking of your dress or what you were doing last night. Fine. Okay. It was then. You think of this, or you think of that. This morning you got up, what did you think? Ah, we had such a lovely time last night. Show me the creativity of it. You had a lovely time, and it was then. So why use this mind in all the thoughts that are gone? Why project it into the future? The best way to eliminate inhibitions is to try to live for the moment. How can you do that? It is to start with just half a dozen times a day. What did I think two minutes ago? You reflect on that. Do it for a little while, and it will become an ingrained habit with you of self-analysis. The inhibitions you suffer from will be lost, and you will live in the moment because inhibitions are of the past, and impressions are of the past. Right, and number two, as you all know, Meditation, Gurushakti, Pranayama. Things like that help because it takes your mind away. WHEN YOU ARE JUST IN THE FLOW, THERE IS NO PLACE FOR INHIBITIONS I do not know if I should discuss these things, but you are talking about inhibitions, and this is one of the most significant inhibitions. Through scientific research, we have discovered that forty percent of the world’s women are frigid, and thirty-eight point four five, if I remember correctly, let us say just thirty-eight points of men at a particular time become impotent. This is the greatest thing in people’s lives because it is the strongest urge, and they worry about it, and the worry
The Active Path to Inner Peace: Calming the Mind Through Action
ANYONE WE CAN LEARN FROM IS A FRIEND The trouble with man is imagination and exaggeration. Most of the ills people suffer from really are imaginary. There is no real foundation; with imagination and thought power, we create them and bring a surface reality to them. All illnesses stem from the mind, and then we start exaggerating. You have a slight headache, and you keep on to yourself, “Oh, I have got a headache, headache, headache.” You are exaggerating that headache. You are not helping it. Occupy yourself in something worthwhile, and that headache is forgotten. It goes away by itself. So, get away from imagination and especially from negative imagination. Imagination plays its part in creativity, but with a more significant majority of people, it also plays a greater role in producing negativity. These are the things that one has to watch out for. Love thine enemy — that is a gross exaggeration. For whom is your enemy? We think he is our enemy, but if you look deeper, perhaps you can learn so much from the very so-called wrong acts of that person, and anyone from whom you can learn something is a friend. THE MIND SHOULD BE USED AS AN INSTRUMENT IN PROPER ANALYSIS It is crucial to how you look at things and always to be alert. Alert and aware of all the happenings around you, and to interpret those happenings in a reasonable, godly manner. If the attitude is correct, you can view everything in the context of the scriptures. Say my wife leaves me. It will hurt for a day or two. It might hurt a bit longer. But will I wallow in that hurt, or will I see the opportunity in the adversity? It might be good if she is gone away for a little while so I could sit down and be in solitude and think. Think of the rights and wrongs, sit down with a pen and a piece of paper, and write down the debit and credit sides, and you will be surprised how wrong you have been. We are always blaming others, never ourselves. But while she is away from you, you can sit and think objectively in that solitude. We always blame others for many reasons: because we live a false life. We are not ourselves. We live a life of what we assume to be and not being what we are. So, the mind should be an instrument, not an obstacle. It should be used correctly in proper analysis, and these analyses are necessary. And if you cannot do it yourself, perhaps you go to a qualified psychologist. They also serve the purpose because they are not involved in your emotions. They can look at you objectively and help you along. So, self-analysis, self-effort, and spiritual practices draw Gurushakti or the power of Grace, and the world is okay. Nothing is wrong with the world; only something is wrong with people. That is all. WE HAVE TO REMOVE THE VEILS ONE BY ONE Speaking from an individual standpoint, you cannot change this world collectively. There have been many reformers who came to earth and tried to reform the world collectively. But it is impossible. Some transformation can take place individually, for it is the units that compose the whole and not the whole composing the units. Therefore, if every person follows these elementary principles: seek balance, be yourself. Take things for what they are, and you develop acceptance. These are the things that bring you joy, for joy too is a process, and if we have the idea that we can change the world or ourselves overnight, it is a fallacy. It is a gradual recognition of our authentic Selves. The veils have to be removed one by one. Sometimes, you get fed up as you remove the onion skins. The vapour gets your eyes. You say, “Oh, why must I have these onions?” That is how, if a person lives his life, everything is alright with me, Jack. You are okay. I am okay. Everything is okay. These attitudes have to be developed, not for the sake of benefitting the world, leave that to the teachers, they will do as much as they can, but talking individually, for yourself only. How can I become more and more happier? How can I become more and more harmonious with myself? How can I become more and more integrated within myself? That is what we need. SPIRITUAL INJUNCTIONS MUST BE CARRIED OUT SPONTANEOUSLY This is an affluent country, yet you have a few million unemployed people. It does not make any logic; it is terrible management and bad government where jobs and things are not created, and human potential is not drawn out. It is not only here; it is everywhere. America itself is such an affluent country, and yet people live under the bread line, while so much food is wasted here that it could feed another small country every day of the year. So much is wasted. Look at the imbalance. So, affluence can bring imbalance, and poverty can bring imbalance. These forces are always there. They will always be there, and we can do nothing about it. You change governments. Today, you have this one; tomorrow, you have that one. But basically, nothing is going to change. You get tax relief, saving two hundred dollars for the year or five hundred dollars according to your income. You save that. But you are not going to keep it, that I promise you. You will say, “Ah! Five hundred dollars less to pay, so let us go out and have a party!” You usually are used to wearing a twenty-dollar dress. So, ah, you will save this year, so you buy a fifty-dollar dress. And meanwhile, you have been used to wearing a twenty-dollar dress all your life. I do not know the prices here; I am just using figures. So, what are you saving? Nothing at
You Are Divine: Recognizing Your Oneness with God
YOU ARE GOD Denial of the oneness with God does not detract you from the path to that oneness. Man has to proceed according to his understanding. One has to proceed from that dualness and pray to thy Father in Heaven. Later you start realising that you are the branches of the tree of Divinity, and the branch is so connected to God. After you realise that you are He: I and my Father are one. The denial is important. To deny that God is beyond me; that is the real denial. God is beyond me, and I am just a human being, a little personality that I think I am. But the idea in progress on the spiritual path is not to think I am what I think I am but to think what I am. This causes conflict. Because here, on the one hand, I am Jean, Jack and Joe; on the other hand, I am praying or looking for that Jean, Jack and Joe that is so far above. A small fish will think in his consciousness that his Divinity or superior is a big fish. A small elephant will think, “Ah, my God is a big elephant.” A little insect will believe that my God is a big insect. Is that not exactly what we are doing when you say you are born in the image of God? According to scriptural injunctions, you are the image of God. You are not, and this might sound very revolutionary to you: you are not the image of God because image implies imagination. So, you are imagining that you are an image of God. This has been brought about by the perpetrators, by the false prophets that try to draw you into a society of togetherness and without making you know, they make you believe that you are the image of God. So, they are preying, not p-r-a-y, but p-r-e-y. They are preying upon your imagination and misleading humanity and telling them that you are the image of God. You are not the image of God because the image, as I just said, is imagining. So, they are trying to make you guess. I want you to know that you are God. I want you to know that you are Divine and are not connected to the mind that makes images, and that makes you imagine various kinds of images. ILLUMINATION IS THE TOTAL REALISATION THAT I AM DIVINE There is no God. There is a Divine energy which permeates every cell of your body, and because of that permeation, you are God. But because you cannot cognise or recognise it, you feel you are so insignificant and low. You think you are a sinner; you feel you are this, you are that you think you are nothing, and yet when you come to the final realisation, you will know you are everything. And when you know that you are everything, all the sufferings and all the miseries will disappear from your life. I do not imagine that I am Divinity; I experience that I am Divinity. That is the goal, and there are paths to it; there are ways to it according to your temperament. But do not take that as a finality, for you are ever-growing, growing, growing, like these beautiful flowers from the bud, expanding, expanding, expanding, until you reach the totality until you reach the essence of what you are. At that moment, illumination comes that I am Divine, which does not mean image-making, but illumination is the realisation that I am Divine. And when that complete realisation comes that you are Divine, all your miseries and sufferings disappear like that; in a flash of a second, they go. For Divinity knows not of imaginings, knows not of afflictions, knows not of sufferings. And when you are there, it is not imagining because imagining is of the mind. You live it. AS THE OBSERVER, YOU ARE NOT AFFECTED I will talk to you about my personal experiences because I have gone through this. I know what I am! This is a sharing, as I have said before. Why should you not also share that and see that I am Divine and there is no opposition to Divinity? Divinity is unity with the entirety of this universe and even beyond. So, you become the observer of the universe, yet you are still the universe. I am a man walking on Earth with all my frailties. I love to have my cigarette; I love my nightcap, Scotch and soda. Why not? What has that to do with my Spirit? I have realised my Spirit and know that I am He, that my Father and I are one, so let the body behave as it wants. I am the observer of the functioning of this body, which is part and parcel of the universe, and this universe cannot function without contractions, expansions, and conflicts. It goes on all the time. But amongst all that, I am still. I know I am eternal. I know I am immortal. I know. What do I know? I know knowingness. What is God? What is He? He is knowingness, a spontaneous knowingness that you are Divinity itself. And standing from that angle, which I want to take you to, to that hill, and observe the functioning of the body, mind, and all that happens around you, and you are not affected at all because you are the observer. The observer is unaffected, which is the stance, the birthright of every human being. EVERYTHING IS GOOD Study the word ignorance carefully. Ignorance means that you are ignoring that which you are. Take heart, my beloveds, dear heart, take heart. Live, live, live, live, live. Do not be the living dead. The living dead is nescience and ignorance. You are alive. Every act you perform is good as long as it does not harm others or yourself. And everything is good. Why feel
The Eternal Bond: The Spirit’s Journey Through Life and Beyond
SORROW COMES FROM WITHIN ME BECAUSE OF MY ATTACHMENT As we usually say, we feel sad when a person is away or on the other side. Why? We do not feel sad because that person has passed away. That is only the surface reason. We feel miserable because of our attachment to that person, our dependency or emotional need, or our so-called assumed love that makes us sad. In India, there is a sect where when a child is born, they all cry, and when a person passes away, they celebrate. They call when a child is delivered because they think that this poor child has come into all this misery. And when a person passes away to the other side, it is their philosophy that he has gone to green pastures, and they celebrate. This philosophy is not entirely true, but there is something good about it: it lacks that attachment. So, if anyone passes away, there is no need for sorrow, none whatsoever, if we understand that that sorrow is from me. It comes from within me because of my selfishness, my attachment. THE SPIRIT WITHIN ME IS THE SAME AS THE SPIRIT WITHIN YOU I know a woman whose little dog passed away, and she was so attached to this dog. I love animals. But this lady was so attached to this little dog that when the little dog passed away, she suffered so much that she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. So, one of her friends brought her to me at our centre in Cape Town, and I gave her these explanations: physically, your dog has passed away, and you are so hurt now because of your attachment. Of course, I went into great detail. But the Spirit within the dog is forever immortal, and if you have a genuine love for that dog, you will come across that dog again because there is no more excellent bond than love. I have seen within our movement, our organization, where people from opposite sides of the world meet and get married and be happy, and a couple of days ago, they did not know that each other existed. I could show you so many instances, and in those instances when I met these people, I felt that although it was not a total love yet, this love that these people had still got far to go, there has been a deep bond in a previous existence. That is why they got together so strongly in this existence. So, I told this lady, ” You will meet this dog again, and if not in this life, perhaps in the next life. But you will meet this dog again in some form or other because the Spirit within the dog is the same Spirit within you. And your love is so powerful for the dog that you will meet.” And she felt nice; she felt better. And within a week, she felt normal, and she had recovered. And this is very true. Why do some theologies say you will meet your mother and father, friends, brothers and sisters, and sweethearts on the other side? What does it mean? There is no actual meeting in that particular form or shape. By the time you leave this earth, that person, the object of your love, might have incarnated again already. But it means that if you have that deep, true bond of love with your mother, father, brother, sister, etc., you will meet that very soul in an incarnate form again. That is what it means. That Spirit is not waiting up there for you; that “when is my daughter coming?” It is a fallacy when they say I will meet you on the other side. But it is true if you say I will meet you on the other side again in an incarnate form. Both of us will be reincarnated, and circumstances will be such that we will meet each other again. THE SPIRIT WITHIN IS FOREVER CONNECTED The individual Spirit, the individual soul – in Sanskrit is called “Jivatman”- will forever remain individual. The Jivatman is a composition of your subtle body empowered with your Spiritual Self. The Spiritual Self is always the pivotal point, and around the inner Self, the Spiritual Self is firstly the subtle body and covering the subtle body is the grosser body you shed. So, at the time of death, the gross body is shed, but the subtle body carries on, and that subtle body does not meet your sweetheart on the other side. It is impossible. If possible, it would be a total contradiction of terms because the subtle body cannot recognize them. You need the organisms of the brain, this little three-and-a-half-pound thing up here. You need eyes. You need ears. You need the various qualities of the physical body to achieve recognition. So, if a loved one departs, someone that you have truly loved, that connection will always remain. For real love is the Spirit within. Real love is that God within, the Spirit within, and that is forever immortal. It is permanently connected. And when the mind is powerful enough in its thought processes and can cognize in its expanded awareness of the Spirit within, then that bond created will rejoin. THE ENTIRETY OF DIVINITY EXIST IN THE MOMENT So, there is nothing to fear. There is nothing to lose. There is nothing to be disappointed about. There is nothing to mope over. And there is no need for unhappiness in love, for the more significant the awareness man develops, the more could he conceive of love. Dante said, “The greater the man, the greater his love.” So why be unhappy? Why be bloody fools? What for? Be joyous! Life is a celebration. Everything around you is celebrating. Look outside. These trees are growing. The grass is growing. These flowers are blooming. What are they doing? They are celebrating the glory of Divinity! They are
The Eternal Flow of Life: Death as a Gateway to Life
THERE IS NO DEATH, AND LIFE IS ETERNAL Life and death are not things apart. Life and death are but two sides of the same coin. It can be a fulfilment, and it is a fulfilment if there is a dialogue. By dialogue, we mean understanding the meaning of life and death, for he that knows the secret of life knows not of death; the communication is complete. That is the purpose of dialogue, to understand the ability to realise what life is and what death is. Is there a death if a man discovers that there is no death? Jesus said, “I know of life and death, I speak of life and death, but I ask you to tell the teachings of life.” I might have the words wrong in the context of the way it was spoken, but it is just the gist of the quotation. There is no death, life is eternal, and every gap between one existence and the other is just a transformation. As we have said before, the same clay can be moulded into a cat or a mouse or a dog. The clay is not destroyed, and if there is no destruction to the clay, then, in essence, there is no death but just a transformation. When we are tired of the clothes we wear, we discard them and buy a new set of clothes, but you, the person, is not destroyed; the clothes are changed. You are in this room, and later you proceed to the next room. You are still there in different circumstances, environments, and conditions. Understanding this is dialogue, that dialogue has to take place within oneself to realise that life is eternal, and there is not a single scripture in this world that will say life ends; they all say that life is endless, and death is a passing phase. Death is the greatest thing that has ever been given to man. It is the greatest gift of God, just as sleep is. Try to stay awake for seven, ten, or even two days; how would you feel? Shakespeare said something extraordinary about sleep. He said, “Sleep is the best nourishment in life’s feast.” In sleep, you regenerate and rejuvenate yourself. There is no difference between sleep and death. It is a difference in duration of time. And death is vital to every creature, for all born must die; that is the law, but to understand death, the secret of death, the meaning of death, the purpose of death is so that you can rest. AFTER LEAVING THIS BODY, WE EVALUATE OURSELVES AND PLAN WHAT TO DO NEXT With our daily living so mixed up and muddled with our physical, emotional, and mental selves, we could never stand aside and look at ourselves. Yes, meditators can. That is why we teach meditation. We cannot stand apart from ourselves and look at ourselves. We have not learnt how to face ourselves in the mirror, but when we leave this body behind, then with our subtle body, we can look at ourselves and evaluate ourselves. Just as in sleep, it gives your body and mind a rest, a rejuvenating effect. So, life is after death, too; when we leave this body, we have this chance to rest. We are not tied up in those emotions connected to the external environment. Then, with that rest and being able to stand apart, we evaluate ourselves, formulate, and plan what to do next and what kind of life to take so that I can progress in my path and reach home to my maker. So, death is so important and understanding this is the dialogue. AFTER A GOOD REST, WE ARE READY TO COME BACK TO THE SCHOOL OF LIFE We understand that by taking sleep, we will feel better tomorrow. If a person is not well, the doctor first says, “Rest, stay in bed”. That is the first thing the doctor says, “Have a good sleep”—same thing. Have a good day. Because bodies can get worn out too, we must acquire a fresher body to return to life’s school. Children get six weeks’ holiday to rest and be fresh enough to return to the same school to another standard, the higher standard. They need that rest before taking that standard. Everything in life shows you that. There is a rest period between every two heartbeats, and every rest between two beats is a death. Man dies ten thousand times a day. When there is a rest between two moments, that split second is death. Like that, there must be a rest period. LIFE IS ETERNAL, AND GOD IS ETERNAL Watch yourself when you are walking; you will rest on one foot while you extend the other foot and rest on the other while you extend the first foot. In everything we observe around us in nature, there is a period of rest, and death is rest, for death, too, is life. But a form of life where it gives us a chance to regenerate ourselves, to evaluate our understanding is the dialogue. When we understand that, we do not fear death because we know that it is just a changing over from one suit into another suit, and life will go on, eternally, for if life ends, God ends, for God is life. Life is eternal as God is eternal. Now, with understanding is the dialogue, and once one understands this and enters into this dialogue within oneself, one finds fulfilment. Understanding is fulfilling. … Gururaj Ananda Yogi: Satsang SA 1978 – 58
Walking with Divinity: The Power of Grace and Conscious Living
DIVINITY IS WITH YOU In our daily life, obstacles will come but do not become faint-hearted, for you have the most significant force with you. The tremendous force of Divinity is with you and within you, and Divinity acts. It does not come down with a hammer or string to tie you up and pull you. He has His ways. He has His ways of showing you the path. You often find instances where you have a problem, and here you just happen to come upon a book and turn a page, and you read one passage, and your entire attitude changes. You see how that force works. It will work through every way and means, and then as the Bible says, He whom He loves most, He chastises. He whom He loves most, He chastises. What is the purpose of that? What is the goal of all the obstacles? What is the purpose of all the suffering? If God is love and love is God? What is the purpose of it all? The purpose is your evolution. The aim is to clear up, to undo all that you have done, not what God has done. Remember, every suffering that we have is by our own doing. We have been the planters. We have sown, and we must reap. That is the law of karma. God has helped there, too, because when you plant, he has brought the necessary sun, rain, and minerals into the ground for that seed to grow. But what kind of seed you are sowing is of your free will: lousy seed, rotten fruit. Good seed, good fruit. You cannot plant potatoes and expect tomatoes in return, but He is always with you. He is in the tomato and the potato. Therefore, as I have said before, your attitude is the most important thing. BECOME RESPONSIBLE I go on telling people to become responsible. Do not even depend upon the guru. The guru only has the torch to shine on the path, the lantern. But be dependent upon your own feet to walk. He will show you the way! He will give you the knowledge, the wisdom. He will stir your Heart and your soul and your mind. He will provide you with the courage to go on the path, the path of the heroes. He will show you how to reach home on the quickest road, for you have to reach home. You have to reach your father’s home! Why tarry and suffer? There is the path. Go! I will give you a push. And if there is a pothole or a little hill, come. Here is my hand. Hold. Let me help to pull you up. But you still have to move your blooming feet. That is how life works. All this comes within the framework of love. The framework of unselfish love can be demonstrated not only by the guru’s love but also by the love of a father, mother, and children to the father and mother and vice versa. All this can be demonstrated in every aspect of life, and when this is well shown in every part of life, then we have some idea of what the living God is all about. If I feel disappointed by the actions of someone, then that disappointment stems within me. I am not responsible for the actions of the other. So why must I be disappointed? The frustration stems from within me only because of what I have expected, my preconception. I get letters, thousands of pages a month from people, and so-and-so writes to me to say, “I love this one so much, but that one does not love me.” And this, that. No, no, no. Do not need. Do not want. “I will love you.” That is what the attitude should be. “I love you, and if you do not love me, OK. Fine. I cannot force you. I cannot force you to love me. That is a quality that has to come spontaneously from yourself.” GRACE IS ALWAYS THERE Always hope! Always have courage! Always have the strength to stand on one’s feet! Always have the power to feel responsible that everything happening to me is because of me and no one else! When a person understands that, we are indeed on the path to happiness. We are indeed on the path of togetherness. This togetherness comes about, to repeat, through spiritual practices and conscious effort to better ourselves, and when these two are put together, Grace dawns on you. The fresh air is always there, as I have said many times. Open the window. The fresh air is there! Grace is there! Grace is not an elusive girl. We are elusive. Does the Bible not say, “Knock and the door shall be opened. Seek, and thou shalt find.” So who has to do it first? We! We have to knock! We have to seek! And then, automatically, everything is there. Desires would be fulfilled. EVEN SELFISH DESIRES WILL BE FULFILLED, BUT BEWARE OF THE CONSEQUENCES Here is something new I will tell you: good desires will be fulfilled, and selfish desires will be fulfilled, too, if you knock and seek. Yes, selfish desires, too, will be fulfilled. But beware of the consequences! Because the thought forces are so, so powerful that even selfish desires can be fulfilled. But there is an aftermath, and it has its consequences which in the long term will add to greater suffering. Immediate, it is excellent. There is a lovely table filled with all the world’s delicacies, but you do not need to be a glutton. There is all the beautiful food to eat. Fine. But if you overeat, very soon there will be indigestion. You have been selfish in your gluttony, but the consequence is indigestion. That applies both ways, for the energies, the Spiritual Forces, are forever neutral. It depends on how you want to use them. BE JOYOUS! LIFE IS A
