Life has a way of introducing us to extraordinary individuals whose presence reshapes our perspectives and enriches our existence. For me, Avatar – Gururaj Ananda Yogi was one such soul. Emerging from the shadows of apartheid in South Africa, he carried a luminous message of meditation and spiritual growth, unburdened by religious or societal dogma. His teachings were transformative, his methods simple yet profound, and his spirit a beacon for many seeking clarity and peace in a world of seeming contradictions.
The Beginning of a Deep Bond
When my wife Jasmini and I co-founded the first East London teaching center, little did we know how deeply intertwined our lives would become with Gururaj’s vision. He was a paradoxical figure—capable of sternness when required but overwhelmingly kind, compassionate, patient and incredibly loving. Through his guidance, my understanding of love expanded. He taught me to live with an open heart and to embrace a life rich in meaning and connection.
Lessons Beyond Words
Gururaj’s influence was not just in his teachings but in his being. He lived as an embodiment of unconditional love and wisdom. His presence brought clarity to life’s most daunting questions, offering solace in moments of uncertainty. He often reminded us that there are no accidents, only lessons and that the path ahead becomes more apparent as our inner self unfolds through meditation. This understanding helped me see life not as a series of random events but as a purposeful journey of growth and awareness.
Love: The Ultimate Teacher
Through Gururaj and my wife of 43 years, Jasmini, I experienced the pinnacle of love in its various forms. While Jasmini’s love grounded me in partnership, companionship, and married bliss, Gururaj’s love opened our hearts to the divine. Their combined influence taught me to love unconditionally and to see life through the lens of purpose and grace. Even after Jasmini’s passing two years ago, their teachings and love remain alive within me, shaping how I live and love.
The Gift of a Living Guru
Having a living guru is a rare blessing. Gururaj was not just a teacher; he was a guide, a confidant, and a source of unwavering support. He answered questions without judgment, offered perspectives that transcended the ordinary, and always pointed to the greater good. His objective wisdom, rooted in love, taught me how to live a spiritual life without needing the trappings of religion or societal rules and beliefs.

Reflecting on my time with Gururaj, I am overwhelmed with love and gratitude. His teachings were about accumulating knowledge, assimilating it into wisdom, and transforming the heart through meditation. Through him, I learned that love is the ultimate truth, meditation is the key to spiritual unfoldment and inner peace, and life’s most incredible wisdom comes when we surrender to its flow.
In sharing this story, I hope to honor the remarkable man Gururaj was and the countless ways he enriched my life. His influence and Jasmini’s continue to be my guiding light, reminding me to love deeply, live fully, and embrace every moment as a step toward clarity and purpose.
