We offer a distinctive approach to spiritual meditation, incorporating mindfulness elements and tailoring each practice specifically to the individual needs of our students.
Mindfulness involves focusing attention and fostering a heightened “non-judgmental awareness” of the present moment. This is often achieved through methods such as meditation, breathwork, and yoga.
Originally rooted in Buddhist philosophy, mindfulness meditation has since developed largely within a psychological framework, particularly through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In contrast, FISU’s approach is grounded in a spiritual foundation. For five decades, our teachings have consistently included these core elements. The enhanced awareness and perception cultivated through FISU Meditation serve as the basis for mindfulness or non-judgmental presence.
In FISU’s approach, “restful alertness” is just the starting point. Tapping into the superconscious or spiritual level brings numerous profound benefits—physically, mentally, and most significantly, spiritually. While mindfulness is about cultivating mental awareness, our goal is to go beyond that to see life through a spiritually aware perspective. This means engaging the spiritual self rather than relying solely on the mind. The journey inward, during this process of self-unfoldment, requires no concentration, control, or rigorous training. All thoughts are simply observed with awareness, without interference, manipulation, or effort.
Many of our techniques incorporate mindful practices, but our focus is on transcending or going beyond the mind—this is the ultimate goal.
You can observe your mind, emotions, reactions, and behavior even outside of meditation.
Mindfulness practices encourage observation of breathing, emotions, and thoughts without reacting. However, mindfulness stops at the mental level and misses the next, more beneficial step—spiritual unfoldment.
Additionally, relying solely on mindfulness techniques or methods that engage only the mental level raises an important question: “Who is the observer?” Who is the one watching or observing the experience?
The observer created through mindful or mental practices alone is merely another form of the ego self. While cultivating this observer is certainly valuable, meditation and spiritual unfoldment go beyond this—seeking to recognize the illusory nature of the ego and the conditioned behaviors it drives. Spiritual unfoldment is essential to refine the ego, dissolve its illusions, and allow our true, higher self to emerge—something that cannot be achieved through thought or thinking alone.
Through meditation aimed at spiritual unfoldment, as taught by FISU, the mind can be refined to awaken the spiritual self or heart, allowing it to become the guiding force in our lives. As a result, the ego-self no longer dominates; instead, it serves as the vessel through which our spiritual essence is reflected or expressed.
These processes foster self-fulfillment, which in turn leads to greater self-esteem and self-confidence —qualities that are often missing in many people’s lives.
Being mindful is certainly preferable to living unconsciously or without awareness and self-reflection. However, for some individuals, relying solely on mindfulness practices may hinder deeper personal progress toward a profound spiritual awakening—what we refer to as unfoldment.
Everything changes in life—for better or worse. Yet meditation remains a constant, a steadfast anchor amidst the ever-shifting tides of existence. It is the one thing I can cling to, offering stability and clarity. With this realization, meditation has become a daily companion, supporting me through life's joys and challenges. It helps me stay present, grounded, and discerning, guiding me to focus on what truly matters while letting go of what is irrelevant.
